Consuelo’s Diary

Dear Diary,

I wanted to thank Lucero, but I didn’t see her for a few days. Then, when I did, she acted funny. She turned away when I called her and ran down the street. Gabriella told me that many street children are afraid to trust anyone; she said they are like wild horses, ready to run if you try to pet or feed them. I asked how Lucero could act so estúpido when she is clever enough to make such a beautiful miniature flower? I would not harm her! But Gabriella says we are lucky and the street children are not; no matter where they sleep or what they have to eat, they live in pain, because their hearts hurt from such terrible lives. Now my heart hurts, as well—for Lucero. Tonight I will pray for a way to help her.
