Shola comes from the city of Kabul in Afghanistan. Except for her sister, Mehri, she has lost all of her family in the war. They live in a house with no roof and spend much of their time feeling hungry and afraid.

One day, a man tells them about a new school in the city—a circus school! He asks them to watch a performance and Shola sees a new way to live her life.

Now she and Mehri spend their days with the circus, studying lessons and learning to sing, walk on stilts, and juggle. Soon they will tour other towns in Afghanistan, helping to teach and entertain children. Shola's hearts feels hope for the first time and she longs to share that feeling with her country.
